Berlin book launch on the Intellect Blog
__________________________________________________________
Thanks to Fashion Week, young designers, and a city-wide campaign of cool, Germany’s capital has remade itself as a fashion hotspot. A new book argues that the city’s chic appeal is the latest chapter in a long history.

Susan Ingram and I dedicated out book, Berliner Chic: A Locational History of Berlin Fashion to the women of Berlin, and it was a very special honour and pleasure to be able to present the book in Berlin and to invite many of the women who made this project possible, inspired us, and continue to inspire us. The book launch took place at the St.George’s English bookstore in Prenzlauer Berg.

Berlin Perspectives: Then and Now – March 30, 2011. Susan Ingram will analyse the urban imaginaries of Equilibrium (2002, dir. Kurt Wimmer) and Aeon Flux (2005, dir. Karen Kusama), both of which were filmed in Berlin. In comparing the hauntingly dystopian vision each film creates by mobilizing different parts and layers of Berlin and its history, Ingram demonstrates how the gendered nature of historical experiences of increasingly late modernity can account for the nature of the cityscapes that are produced.
